Germany Waives Airport Transit Visa for Indian Passport Holders

Germany

In a major development for Indian travellers, Germany has officially eliminated the Schengen Airport Transit Visa (Type A) requirement for Indian passport holders transiting through its international airports, effective today, June 3, 2026.

The landmark decision, first announced during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s official visit to India on January 12-13, 2026, was formally published in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt) on June 2, 2026, before coming into force the following day.

What the New Rule Means for Indian Travellers

Under the revised policy, Indian passport holders connecting through major German hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich en route to a non-Schengen destination can now do so without obtaining a transit visa in advance.

However, travellers must strictly adhere to the following conditions:

  • Remain within the international transit zone of the airport
  • Not leave the airport or enter German/Schengen territory
  • Complete their onward journey to a non-Schengen country within 24 hours of arrival

The relaxation applies exclusively to airport transit and does not grant entry into Germany or any other Schengen nation. Passengers wishing to leave the airport – even briefly – must still obtain the appropriate Schengen visa.

Important Exceptions

According to the official Germany Visa website, the transit privilege does not apply in the following scenario:

“If your transit involves more than one Schengen country, the ‘transit privilege’ does not apply, and you will need a Schengen tourist visa. This is because exiting the transit area in one Schengen country constitutes entry into the Schengen Zone, even for a brief period.”

Travellers with connecting flights that require changing airports or passing through multiple Schengen nations must still secure a regular Schengen visa.

Official Reactions: India Welcomes the Move

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has warmly welcomed Germany’s decision.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

“We welcome the operationalisation by Germany of the announcement waiving the requirement of a transit visa for Indian nationals transiting through Germany, exclusively by air, with effect from June 03, 2026.”

He added that the announcement followed discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the latter’s India visit in January 2026, and noted that the arrangement is expected to significantly enhance people-to-people ties between the two nations.

The German Embassy in New Delhi, in a press note issued on June 2, 2026, stated:

“This implementation is a result of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s trip to India in January of this year. It underlines the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening German-Indian relations, facilitating the movement of people, and further strengthening economic ties.”

Benefits for Indian Travellers

The removal of the transit visa requirement eliminates a key procedural hurdle for Indian passport holders, offering several tangible advantages:

  • Reduced paperwork – No need to apply for a Type A transit visa at German missions
  • Lower costs – Savings on visa application fees and related expenses
  • Greater flexibility – Access to a wider range of flight routes via German hubs
  • Stress-free connections – No last-minute documentation issues for eligible transits

For students, professionals, and families travelling long distances to destinations in North America, South America, or other regions, the change translates into a smoother, more straightforward journey planning process.
